IDFA x UvA: Private History & The Danube Exodus

For the first time, IDFA, UvA and VOX-POP join forces to present an inspiring student pathway through the festival that combines great documentary film with academic talks, discussions and masterclasses. On November 25, IDFA will screen Private History & The Danube Exodus at Pathé, followed by a talk and case study at VOX-POP.

>> The Danube Exodus
Combining material from a diverse range of archives, the
prominent Hungarian found-footage filmmaker Pèter
Forgács brings to life a footnote from 20th-century
history: an exodus in two opposite directions, driven by
political forces.

>> Private History
“A free selection from a few old amateur films” is the
subtitle of Private History. Found footage is edited into
chronological order to subtly tell the history of Hungary in
the turbulent era between 1920 and 1950.

This after talk will be hosted by the study associations of History (Studievereniging Kleio) and European Studies (Study Association for European Studies SES). They will provide an in-depth discussion about found footage as a primary source for documentaries and historical research. How do you approach primary sources like these and how do they represent history? With special guests such as the Hungarian director Péter Forgács, Dutch filmmaker Peter Delpeut and lecturer East European Studies Ewa Stanczyk.

>>Case Study: The Biography of Film
In the case study, hosted by the department of Media Studies, we will talk with filmmakers, archivists and scholars about the life of documentaries. How to document and archive their concept development, research, production, circulation and impact? What about unused materials? With special guests Paula Albuquerque, Annet Dekker, Péter Forgacs, Mark-Paul Meijer, Frank de Jong and others.
