War at Our Door

War at Our Door
Q&A session for all students about the war in Ukraine

The terror of the on-going Russian invasion of Ukraine has left many of us seeking answers to the shocking events unfolding. Why this massive act of violence, and why now? To what extent can geopolitical, political, cultural, and historical factors explain the events? What role do (social) media play in these developments? And what is our responsibility, now that we face war at Europe’s door?

UvA’s European Studies and Russian & Slavic Studies programmes, student organisations SES and Radost, and the research schools ASCA, ARTES, ASH and AISSR, together with the inter-faculty ACES research centre, bring together a transdisciplinary panel of experts for a Q&A session on Wedsneday 2nd of March to answer your questions. The event is meant to facilitate knowledge exchange, but also to offer a space to come together and jointly consider these deeply upsetting events.

Speakers are historian Alexander Etkind (European University Institute Florence), and UvA colleagues political scientist Olga Burlyuk, Eastern Europe experts Michael Kemper and Christian Noack, media anthropologist Johana Kotišová, and cultural historian / Slavist Ellen Rutten from the University of Amsterdam. Pola Cebulak from UvA European Studies will moderate the event.
